Get set to toast Pina Colada Day with this classic Puerto Rican recipe

True fans of this cocktail that epitomizes tropical relaxation will know the Pina Colada was invented in Puerto Rico, and the day devoted to its celebration is coming up on July 10.

The concoction of coconut cream, pineapple juice, white rum and ice was born in the island’s capital city of San Juan, but the exact identity of the creator has caused controversy over the years. Three bartenders claim the invention as their own, two originating from the Caribe Hilton Hotel in 1954. The third is a mixologist at Barrachina in Old San Juan who says he first stirred up the drink in 1963. It’s here you’ll find a plaque at the entrance to commemorate the birthplace of the Pina Colada. Some islanders believe the drink dates back as far as the 1800s when, they say, pirate Roberto Cofresi served it to his crew.

For a taste of a traditional blended Pina Colada, try this recipe at home.

Ingredients:
•    60ml coconut cream
•    120ml pineapple juice
•    4 cubes of ice 
•    60ml white rum
•    Cherries, pineapple wedges and whipped cream for toppings

Directions: In a blender, mix the coconut cream, pineapple juice, ice and rum until all the ingredients are blended smoothly. Pour the drink into a glass and top with your favourite garnishes.
